Weave in the Ends
We want to weave in all of the ends with the structure of the tree shape in mind. We want the corners to look clean and not pulled too tight. Trim any excess yarn.
Frosting
Feel free to get creative and design your frosting in any way you choose, but here are some more structured frosting instructions if you'd like!
The front panel has 5 lines of red frosting. Each line consists of chain stitches and medium tails. We'll place the chain lines in a diagonal pattern onto the front panel one at a time beginning with the largest. We want to keep realistic frosting curves in mind instead of stitching them straight across. We'll use the tails and a tapestry needle to stitch them in place, tying off and trimming any excess yarn on the back.
Largest Frosting Line: Chain 16
Moving up, the next three are: Chain 12, Chain 10, Chain 8
The bottom trunk: Chain 6
Sprinkles
Using green yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch on some little sprinkles in all different directions. Tie off and trim any excess yarn on the back side.
Christmas Tree Cake Assembly
So here we are with our completed front and back panels. We're going to make a border to attach them together.
Line up the front and back panels of the Crochet Christmas Tree Cake one over the other (make sure the correct sides are facing out).
We're going to join the front and back panels with a round of single crochet using white yarn (*see the exceptions below before you start).
- At each 'point': SC, chain 1, SC into the same stitch
- At each 'corner': slip stitch
With the front facing you, I recommend starting at the bottom right (so you'll complete the flat bottom portion with the trunk last).
Let's pause at the bottom left and add our stuffing. We want our tree cake to be nice and plump without over-stuffing; we don't want to stretch the stitches.
Once stuffed, continue single crocheting (*with the exceptions) across the bottom until you reach the beginning of the border. Slip stitch into the first stitch of the border and tie off with a long enough tail to weave in the end.
Using a tapestry needle, weave in the ends and trim any excess yarn.
