  • YARN:
    • #4 Worsted Weight, 80 yards Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton or suitable substitute of 100% cotton
  • TOOLS:
    • US Size (G/6) 4.0 mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
    • Yarn needle, Scissors

Stitches/Abbreviations: US Terms

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sk – skip
  • blo – back loop only
  • sts – stitches
  • yo – yarn over
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • Special Stitches: 3rd loop hdc = behind the top loops of the hdc there is a horizontal loop in which to work; extended double crochet (edc) = [yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through, yo, pull through 1 loop, (yo, pull through 2 loops) twice]

  • Small (Medium, Large)

Dimensions (diameter across top):

  • 5.75 (6.25, 6.75)”/14.5 (16, 17) cm

Gauge:

  • after 7 rounds are worked, circle should measure about 4.25”/ 11 cm

Notes:

  • This is worked in the round from the bottom up.
  • You can use any combination of colors for this project. Find some 100% cotton yarn scraps in your stash and have fun.
  • When joining in the round, join with a sl st to the first st in that round.
  • Beginning ch sts do not count as a st.
  • This specific bowl cozy may not work with all style bowls, this will work best with bowls that have a straight top edge.

Create a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, 8 hdc into ring, join. 8 hdc.

Round 2: Ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, join. 16 hdc.

Round 3: Ch 1, 2 hdc in 1st, hdc in next, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next; repeat from * around, join. 24 hdc.

Round 4: Ch 1, 2 hdc in 1st, hdc in next 2, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 2; repeat from * around, join. 32 hdc.

Round 5: Ch 1, 2 hdc in 1st, hdc in next 3, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 3; repeat from * around, join. 40 hdc.

Round 6: Ch 1, 2 hdc in 1st, hdc in next 4, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 4; repeat from * around, join. 48 hdc.

Round 7: Ch 1, 2 hdc in 1st, hdc in next 5, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 5; repeat from * around, join. 56 hdc. Small continue to Body.Circle should measure about 4.25”/11 cm.

Round 8:Ch 1, 2 hdc in 1st, hdc in next 6, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 6; repeat from * around, join. 64 hdc. Medium continue to Body. Circle should measure about 4.75”/12 cm.

Round 9:Ch 1, 2 hdc in 1st, hdc in next 7, *2 hdc in next, hdc in next 7; repeat from * around, join. 72 hdc. Large continue to Body. Circle should measure about 5.5”/14 cm.

Round 1: Ch 1, 2 blo hdc in 1st, blo hdc in next8, *2 blo hdc in next, blo hdc in next 8; repeat from * around, join. 80 hdc.

All Sizes: S (M, L)

Round 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join. 64 (72, 80) hdc.

Round 3: Ch 1, 3rd loop hdc in each st around, join.

Round 4: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join.

Rounds 5-7: Repeat Rounds 3-4 ending on a Round 3 repeat. Try the cozy on a bowl, cozy should be about 1″/2.5 cm from the top rim. If you need more height, work another repeat and then continue to the last 3 rounds.

Round 8: Ch 1, sc in next 10 (12, 14), hdc in next 2, dc in next 3, edc in next 2, dc in next 3, hdc in next 2, sc in next 20 (24, 28), hdc in next 2, dc in next 3, edc in next 2, dc in next 3, hdc in next 2, sc in next 10 (12, 14), join. 64 (72, 80) sts.

Round 9: Ch 1, sc in next 10 (12, 14), hdc in next 2, dc in next 2, edc in next, 2 edc in next 2, edc in next, dc in next 2, hdc in next 2, sc in next 20 (24, 28), hdc in next 2, dc in next 2, edc in next, 2 edc in next 2, edc in next, dc in next 2, hdc in next 2, sc in next 10 (12, 14), join. 68 (76, 84) sts.

Round 10: Ch 1, sk 1st, blo sl st loosely in each st around, join to first skipped st.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
