YOU WILL NEED:

  • Poster board
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pencil
  • Yarn or string
  • Hole punch
  • Poster paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Mod Podge – A specific glue used for decoupage
  • Adhesive stickers
  • Crayons
  • Scrap paper (different shapes and bright colours)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Step 1

Start by decorating a sheet of poster board.
You can use any colour you like, but we have used use pink, red, white, and gold. Children will love decorating with a variety of materials and can make each sheet different from each other. Get them started with materials you already have at home, such as stickers, scraps of paper and poster paints.
Use the colours to create fun geometrical patterns or cut scrap paper into shapes and glue them to the poster board.

However you choose to decorate them, before continuing leave them to dry completely.

Step 2

While the posters dry, make a heart shaped template about 15 cm in diameter and punch two holes along the centreline, one at the top and one at the bottom. We used a screw punch, but a hole punch works well too.

Step 3

Trace the template onto your decorated sheets of poster board and cut along the outlines.
You will need to cut out three hearts to make each 3D heart, so cut out as many as you like.

Once they are all cut out, use the template and hole punch to make holes at the top and bottom of each paper heart.

Step 4

To make a 3D heart, take three paper hearts and fold two in half, leaving the third flat.

Step 5

Apply a line of hot glue along the edge of the first folded heart and place it onto the flat heart holding it in place until it has dried. Make sure the holes are aligned. Do the same with the second folded heart but glue it to the opposite side of the flat heart.

Step 6

Cut a piece of yarn or string and feed it through the top hole on the paper heart, tying into a loop. Once you make more 3D hearts, you can use yarn to tie them all together to form a long paper decoration. All you have to do now is hang it up in your home!
