Supplies

Here’s what you need to make a DIY giant Easter Basket:
Laundry Basket: I used a laundry basket from Dollar Tree, but you can find similar baskets at Walmart and other stores
Pool Noodle: Used to make the handle of the Easter basket; from Dollar Tree – many DT stores carry them year round now
2.5 inch wide Ribbon: I found pink burlap type ribbon at Dollar Tree in the Easter section. You’ll need about 6 yards of ribbon, so if you are using the ribbon from DT you will need two spools.
Zip ties: You’ll need 2 zip ties that are long enough to go around the pool noodle (nine inches).
Narrow White Ribbon (optional): to make the stripes on the pool noodle handle
You will also need some tape.

Step 1:

Weave Ribbon around Basket

To turn the laundry basket into something that looks more like a traditional Easter basket, you’ll weave the wide ribbon in and out of the slots on the side of the basket. Cut a piece of ribbon that will wrap all the way around the basket plus a few inches. Weave it around the basket, going over a plastic piece, then under the next plastic piece, then over, etc.

On the top row, make sure that the ribbon goes outside the plastic pieces that are right in the middle of the handles on each side.

When you get back to where you started, overlap the ribbon a few inches and clip the excess. Then use tape to secure the ends to each other.

Start on the next row, this time going under the plastic pieces you went over in the top row.

Repeat until you’ve woven ribbon through all four sections of the laundry basket. alternating which plastic pieces are over/under each row.

Step 2:

Add Stripes to the Handle

This step is optional. If you’d like to add stripes to the handle you can wrap thin white ribbon around the pool noodle. Tape the end of the ribbon to the pool noodle at a 45 degree angle.

Roll the noodle to wrap the ribbon around it, pulling the ribbon fairly tight. Use tape in a couple places to secure the ribbon to the noodle.

Step 3:
Attach the Handle

Locate the plastic piece that’s directly under each handle and slide a zip tie behind it.

Fasten the zip tie around one end of the pool noodle. Attach the other end of the pool noodle to the other side of the basket. Pull the zip ties tight, trim the excess, and then push the trimmed portion to the side.

The giant easter basket is now complete and ready to fill.
