DIY Sidewalk Paint

Supplies needed:– shaving cream (use only shaving cream foam, not shaving gel)
– food coloring
– paper or plastic bowls, or mini pie tins like we used here
– assorted paint brushes and sponges
– spoons or craft sticks for mixing
I like using disposable bowls to hold the paint because it makes clean up quick and easy. You can use plastic bowls if you wish, you might just need to let them soak in order to remove all of the coloring left behind.
Directions:
1. Spray some of the shaving foam into each bowl. There really is no right or wrong measurement. I usually put about 1 1/2 cups per container. You can use more or less depending on your needs.
2. Add 5-7 drops of food coloring per container. The more you add, the darker the hue will be. You can add more or less depending on your preferences.
3. Use a spoon or craft stick to mix the food coloring into the shaving foam. Mix well. If you are using the same spoon for mixing all of your containers, make sure you rinse it off between mixes so the colors don’t blend.
4. Once the shaving foam and food coloring are mixed well, you can start painting!
We like to use an assortment of brushes and sponges to create different paint effects. The paint can be applied directly to the pavement. It has a slightly puffy texture and is fun for kids to move around.
Kids can smear it, dab it, or even use their hands as they would with finger paint.
Be sure to offer a variety of brushes so you don’t mix the colors up. You can also offer a jar of water for kids to rinse off brushes in between uses. Paper towels or kitchen towels may also come in handy!
Tips for Cleaning and General Use:
Food coloring may stain skin but no worries, it tends to wash clean after a few rounds with warm water and soap.
When you are done with your sidewalk creations, you can let the rain take care of them or rinse away with soap and water. Don’t panic if you still see traces of color, it will fade away rather quickly.
I have found that this 2 Ingredient Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Paint is best when used right away. Don’t mix up a batch until you are ready to use it, and avoid saving any leftover paint.
