How to Make DIY Plant Markers

Supplies You Will Need

  • Scrabble Tiles: If you have an old Scrabble game lying around that you won’t use anymore, feel free to use those tiles for this spring craft. However, you can buy bags of Scrabble tiles on Amazon that are exactly the same as the ones in the game.
  • Wooden Sticks: You can probably use popsicle sticks for these herb markers but I didn’t feel they were long enough, especially for herbs with long names (i.e. rosemary, lavender, etc.). I purchased these 15″ long bamboo sticks to make sure I had enough room to glue on the tiles and enough “stick” at the bottom to insert into the dirt.
  • Hot Glue Gun & Hot Glue

DIY Plant Label Instructions

Step 1

Warm up your hot glue gun so the glue is hot when you’re ready to begin adhering the tiles to the bamboo stick.

Step 2

While the glue gun is warming up, place the scrabble tiles on a flat surface and face all of the tiles up with the letters showing. Find the tiles you need to spell out the names of the plants you are labeling. Place tiles in small piles so that once you begin gluing you don’t have to search for tiles.

Step 3

Take one of the bamboo sticks and place it vertically on a flat surface. Add a dab of hot glue at the top of the stick. Carefully & quickly adhere a scrabble tile to the dab. Press down for 10 seconds to secure the tile.

Step 4

Continue adding scrabble tiles vertically down the bamboo stick spelling out the name of your plant. Place the scrabble tiles one on top of the other (leaving no space between each tile).

Step 5

Depending on where you are placing your DIY herb markers, you can trim the end of the bamboo stick if it’s too long. I trimmed about 5″ off the bottom by simply using a pair of kitchen shears. The bamboo is very easy to cut.

Step 6

The fun part! Place your DIY plant markers in the garden next to its corresponding plant and enjoy the charm your homemade labels add to the garden.
