Candle making supplies

  • jar
  • coloring
  • soy wax
  • pouring pot
  • candle wick
  • festive ribbon (optional)
  • sweet orange essential oil

Step 1: melt the wax

The amount of soy wax you use will depend on the size of your jar. A good rule of thumb is 1 pound (by weight) of candle wax will equal 20 ounces (in volume) when pouring into containers or molds.

But you know I don’t measure if I don’t have to. I have a 12oz jar and melted about 4 cups of wax for it with a little bit left over.

Once melted, remove from heat and let it sit for about 3 minutes to cool.

Step 2: adhere the wick

While your wax is melting, stick the metal part of the wick into the melting wax (just the bottom) and quickly press it against the bottom of the jar. Hold it in place for a few seconds until the wax dries.

Step 3: add color and/or fragrance

Add about 30 drops of essential oil (more if you want a more prominent scent).

Add color. Keep adding drops until you’re satisfied. Remember that the color will be lighter when the wax dries.

Step 4: pour the wax into the jar

When your wax has had time to cool off, pour it into the jar slowly and secure the wick with two knives. They don’t always stand straight up on their own.

Let it cool.

Tie a cute, festive ribbon around the top and enjoy your candle. Or you can give it to someone else to enjoy. Whatever makes you happy.
