Instructions for Tire Planters:
Wash and spray paint your tires first if you want your tire planters to be colorful.
Step 1) Drill drain holes.
- The first thing you want to do when creating your own tire planters is to ensure there are some drain holes on the bottom of your tire (bottom meaning when it’s hanging). This is to ensure that when you water or when rain water gets in can get out. The same goes for any planter but especially with these because the pooling water can push the soil out and then you have sad flowers trying to grow in bad conditions and who wants that?
- I drilled a hole with my drill bit in between each tread section with no hole being in the same location horizontally. This will help the water to drain evenly.
Step 2) Drill top hole. The next step is to place your tire right side up. You will need to drill a hole in the center of the tire for your eye bolt.
Step 3) Place eye bolt in the top hole and give it a couple of good twists into the tire.
Step 4) Attach your eye bolt with a nut on the inside of the tire. This will ensure that it is secure and won’t back out once it takes weight when hung.
Step 5) Attach hook to hold chain. Now I got lucky when it came to hanging the tires. There was a piece of 2×8 already attached to the building. I simply drilled another 2×4 over the top to make sure that the tires would have enough support as they hang and attached the chain hook with screws.
Step 6) Attach chain to eye bolt in the tire.
Step 7) Hang chain from the hook on the wall.
Step 8) Place top soil in the bottom of the tire and plant the flowers.
My Step 9) Cover the building wall with plastic. This step would normally be the very first step, only easier! You will cover an area to spray paint the tires on the ground before hanging them!
My Step 10) Spray paint the tires. Again, you would want to do this on the ground if you already planning to paint them. I used the following colors: Rustoleum Seaside, Rustoleum Berry Pink, and Rustoleum Real Orange.
